Motorcyclist Loses Leg In Route 70 Crash In Toms River

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A motorcyclist had his leg amputated in a crash Wednesday morning when a car turned into his path on Route 70, Toms River police said. John Troncone, 25, of Jackson, was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune following the crash that happened about 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Route 70 and Whitesville Road, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department. Troncone was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Route 70 and had a green traffic signal when Robin Smith, 44, of Berkeley Township, turned left onto Whitesville Road from Route 70 in front of him, Messina said. Messina said several good Samaritans stopped and rendered aid to Troncone immediately while waiting for police to arrive. Toms River Patrol Officer Bridget Badalis applied two lifesaving tourniquets to Troncone's leg before he was flown to the hospital, Messina said. Smith was treated at the scene for minor injuries, Messina said. Also responding to the scene were Toms River traffic safety officers, several patrol officers, Ocean County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigation, Toms River Community Service Officers and Hatzolah. Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Terry Warren is investigating the accident. Smith was cited for failure to yield at an intersection, reckless driving, and an unregistered vehicle, she said.
