PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island marked another step in its final phase of pandemic reopening Thursday: announcing that remaining restrictions on "higher risk" activities including nightclubs, saunas, live performances and hookah bars. The lifted restrictions take effect on Friday. These high-risk activities continue to be of concern for unvaccinated Rhode Islanders, who are at risk of contracting COVID-19 in indoor settings without physical distancing, especially when masks are not worn. All unvaccinated Rhode Islanders are strongly encouraged to wear a mask at all times indoors. The Rhode Island Department of Health also strongly encouraged anyone who is eligible to get vaccinated but has not yet done so to get their shot as soon as possible, especially as more transmissible variant of COVID-19 circulate in the state. Here's what's changing under the lifted restrictions. Live performancesIndoor live performance venues can return to full capacity, without the need for physical distancing or mask-wearing. Previously, venues had to have at least 6 feet of space between people if masks were not worn, or 3 feet if attendees were masked. Indoor hookah loungesUnder previous guidance, the use of hookahs and waterpipes were strictly forbidden unless only fully vaccinated patrons were allowed into the area. When there are no longer any coronavirus-specific protocols, the Department of Health continues to have general safety and health best practices guidelines in place. Saunas and whirlpoolsPreviously, saunas and hot tubs could only be used if the facility verified that users were fully vaccinated. Occupancy can return to pre-pandemic levels. NightclubsAll pandemic-related restrictions on nightclubs no longer apply. Previously, these establishments could only operate at 50 percent capacity, or full capacity if they were limited to only fully vaccinated patrons.
