Rhode Island Leaders Warn Of 'Drive Safe To Work' Scam

PROVIDENCE, RI — State leaders warned Rhode Islanders to be on the lookout for a new scam involving the coronavirus pandemic. In the past days, several residents reported receiving text messages encouraging them to sign up for the "COVID-19 Safe Drive To Work" program. No such program exists in Rhode Island, Sec. of State Nellie Gorbea said. Anyone who receives such a message is urged not to click any links or reply. Instead, report the scam to Attorney General Peter Neronha's Consumer Protection Unit by calling 401-274-4400 or emailing [email protected]. If the person clicks the link in the text message, they are redirected to a website that looks like an official Rhode Island Department of State page. There, they are prompted to enter their personal information. Anyone who already gave their information is urged to reach out to Neronha's office immediately.
