NORTHPORT, AL — Multiple agencies responded Wednesday afternoon after a man told police he lost control of his SUV before crashing into the front of the CVS Pharmacy on U.S. Highway 82 in Northport at its intersection with Highway 69.
Northport Police Department Assistant Chief Keith Carpenter told Patch the call from the crash came in at approximately 12:17 p.m. He went on to say the 2008 Chrysler Aspen was driven by a 67-year-old Tuscaloosa resident, who informed police that his pants leg caught on the accelerator when he was at the light heading north on Lurleen Wallace Boulevard (Highway 86).
From the driver's statement, along with witnesses, the large SUV then sped through the redlight, striking two other vehicles and crossing Highway 82 before topping the median and grass area, eventually coming to a stop crashing into the store.
One of the other drivers involved in the crash, who asked not to be named, said the entire event happened quickly and she was unharmed. Her car, however, had minor damage to its quarter panel on the back driver's side.
Carpenter said the driver of the Chrysler was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He then pointed out the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
