About Us: R & Company is the pre-eminent design gallery in NYC, representing 15 international artists as well as a wealth of important historical furniture and design objects. The gallery presents 7-10 exhibitions annually in its Tribeca location as well as participating in international design fairs in the US and Europe. We collaborate closely with artists to produce original commissioned work for select clients. Position Summary: The Art Handler reports to the Assistant Registrar and the Senior Art Handler, and works between the galleries and the warehouse at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Art Handler will assist in the packing, handling, delivery, and installation of our inventory, which includes contemporary and historical works of design. The Art Handler will interface with clientele, gallery directors, sales staff, and operations team members (registrars, technicians, restorers, art handlers), as well as artists and vendors. The Art Handler will assist and support the operations team with general moving and handling of the inventory at both the warehouse and Tribeca galleries. This position will also support the installation, registration and delivery needs for fairs and exhibitions, and may require work outside of the standard 10am-6pm hours and/or over weekends. Job Duties & Responsibilities: ● Driving a Sprinter cargo van in NYC safely and effectively; ● Loading inventory on and off van; delivery and collection from clients, vendors, and artists in the New York City area and the Hamptons; ● Delivery and installation of inventory to local, national, and international art fairs. Out-of-state fairs may require an extended stay out-of-state for the duration of the fair. ● Moving inventory between and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse and Tribeca galleries; ● Safeguarding and protecting the inventory with proper packing and handling techniques;w ● Installing artworks including design, framed works, sculptures, and hanging lamps (anchoring, measuring, leveling in a timely, neat and efficient manner); ● Cleaning the inventory using the approved agents and methods as determined by the artists, registration, and/or restoration staff; ● Light construction: spackling, sanding, painting, wall building, familiarity with drywall and drywall studding etc.; ● General gallery upkeep (paint touchups, trash removal, skylight/window cleaning, floor cleaning); ● Basic carpentry and crate building; ● Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. REQUIREMENTS: ● A valid NY State driver’s license and familiarity with driving in NYC, ideally with experience driving a cargo van or other large commercial vehicles ● Knowledge of proper handling, packing, storage and installation techniques for furniture, lighting, design and art ● Ability to lift at least 50 lbs ● Ability to interact in a professional manner with co-workers, clients, and vendors ● Strong organizational and problem solving skills ● Detail oriented, Possessing initiative and a positive attitude ● Willingness to learn ● Takes pride in work ● Knowledge of basic woodworking and modern design a plus. *This position would begin as part time freelance with the possibility of becoming full time.
