The Gardens at Heather Farm (GHF), a beautiful six acre non-profit public garden, is seeking a motivated, team-oriented Facilities Assistant to join our team in Walnut Creek. The Facility Assistant is responsible for performing overall maintenance of our facilities, including indoor and outdoor areas, for performing set-up and clean-up duties related to events taking place on the property, and for assisting rental clients and staff with operational needs. Daily, weekly and monthly cleaning and maintenance routines need to be followed carefully and thoroughly, and immediate issues should be responded to promptly. The ideal candidate is experienced in a facilities maintenance role. The ideal candidate has experience with dealing with thermostats, kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies, tools, and audio-visual equipment. The candidate must have physical endurance to stand for long periods of time, walk and work over large areas, including multiple rooms and outdoor landscapes, and to handle heavy-lifting of furniture, supplies and equipment. Determination, organization, a keen eye for detail, and strong self-monitoring skills are also imperative in this job. The schedule for this part-time position primarily on weekdays between 8 am and 2 pm (specific hours are flexible and will vary) ranging from 20 to 30 hours per week with occasional shifts on weekends to assist with events. Primary Job Responsibilities: ● Arranges and supervises maintenance and repair of building, equipment and exterior structures, including finding vendors and contractors, getting quotes, confirming contracts and scheduling work for services needed at the facility such as janitorial, HVAC, pest control, plumbing, electrical, kitchen, fire department, and health department. ● Maintains relationship with City of Walnut Creek for specific repairs and maintenance of building exterior and other structures. ● Maintains inventory of equipment, furniture and supplies, orders or supervises ordering of new equipment and supplies. ● Works closely with the Executive Director and Garden Manager in inspecting grounds and buildings regularly for safety, maintenance problems, vandalism, equipment failure and opportunities for improvement. ● Manages the security system of the building and external structures, including working with the alarm company, police, staff, volunteers and renters to ensure a secure site. ● Works with the Capital Improvements Committee to execute facility projects as needed. ● Set up and remove tables, chairs and equipment for daily events. ● Monitor event space and assist renters during their events as needed. ● Empty and reline all wastebaskets and trash cans, including bathrooms, kitchen, library, and offices. ● Pick up and dispose of debris from all property areas including parking lot, building and garden. ● Clean all glass doors and mirrors. ● Clean all glass windows, inside and out. ● Sweep entryways inside and out. ● Sweep deck, ramp and side stairway. Hose down when necessary. ● Dust and wipe all counters, tables, and windowsills in all building spaces. ● Vacuum all carpeting and doormats. ● Remove cobwebs from interior and exterior of building. ● Make sure kitchen floor, counters, sinks and refrigerator are clean and sanitary. Clean as needed. ● Dry mop and sweep floors as necessary. Wet mop or buff as needed. ● Keep storage rooms organized so space and items are easily accessible. ● Keep track of maintenance and custodial supplies and order when restocking is needed. ● Check and replace light bulbs in fixtures as needed. ● Perform monthly maintenance routines on kitchen appliances. ● Perform light repairs and other facility maintenance tasks such as fixing doors, fixing furniture, painting, and other minor maintenance jobs. ● Empty exterior trash receptacles in the garden regularly and monitor dumpsters and trash enclosure. ● Serve as on-site staff during large public events and fundraisers. Minimum Qualifications • One year’s experience in a custodial role at a public or private facility • Ability to lift 50 lbs and pushcarts weighing over 300 lbs • Valid CA Driver’s License • Must be over age 21 • Authorized to work in the U.S. • Conversational in English language Desired Skills • Highly organized, motivated and efficient • Great at Time-management and working independently • Extremely reliable and punctual • Positive attitude and willingness to get things done • Experience with making minor repairs to equipment and building fixtures
