The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner, Basil Seggos explains that ECO officers enforce 71 chapters of New York State Environmental Conservation Law such as "deer poaching ;solid waste dumping; illegal mining; the black market pet trade, and emissions violations". In 2020, ECOs and Investigators in New York state answered 29,673 calls and issued 11,952 tickets or arrests warrants. The Forest Ranger units patrol more than five million acres of land in the parks system. In 2020, DEC Forest Rangers conducted 492 search and rescue missions, extinguished 192 wildfires, managed eight prescribed fires that served to rejuvenate more than 203 acres, and helped enforce DEC rules . Forest Rangers and ECOs were called in as support after of Sept. 11, Superstorm Sandy, and recently helped in the 2015 search for two escaped felons from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.
