Description
Purpose
The purpose of the class is to give students a head start on learning the most difficult subjects in the biology curriculum to provide a strong conceptual foundation that will facilitate success in the school year. A second, but as important, purpose is to make biology interesting and instill a sense of wonder in students.
Audience
The class is for high school students enrolled in a biology course in the 2021/2022 school year. It will be particularly helpful to students who will be taking Advanced Placement Biology.
Topics
• The central role of proteins in living systems: protein structure and function
• DNA as a blueprint for building proteins: structure, transcription, and translation
• The central role of reproduction in biology: mitosis and meiosis
• Energetics in living things: photosynthesis and metabolism
The class will utilize state-of–the-art computer simulations and videos.
Dr. Jeffrey Kidder, Instructor
• Former high school biology teacher and university professor
• Master’s and doctoral degrees in biological sciences from Cornell University
• Taught in Cornell’s introductory program for more than a decade as a laboratory instructor, postdoctoral fellow, and lecturer—highest evaluated instructor
• Teaching awards at Cornell and Rutgers Universities.
• More than 25 years experience teaching biology and natural history to students kindergarten through graduate school
Time
Full course Session I: July 5-23; Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:00-10:30 a.m. (13.5 hours)
Full course Session II: July 30-August 16; Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9:00-10:30 a.m., and Saturday, August 14, 9:00-10:30 a.m. (13.5 hours)
