BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY —The Bridgehampton Union Free District's proposed budget for 2021 to 2022 has passed on the second go-round. After the budget was voted down in May by a narrow margin, voters turned out Tuesday and passed the spending plan 181 to 120; the budget passed at 60.13. percent. The first attempt by the Bridgehampton Union Free School District to pierce the tax cap failed in May when the proposed budget failed, with 150 "yes" votes to 103 "no," or 59.28 percent. If the budget had failed in the second vote, a contingency budget would have been implemented. The proposed budget for the 2021 to 2022 school year, $20,658,612, requires a tax levy increase of $1,466,190, which exceeds the statutory tax levy increase limit of $481,238 for the school fiscal year — and therefore exceeds the state tax cap. To pass, the measure needed to be approved by 60 percent of voters, which is what happened Tuesday. Bridgehampton was the only local district to try and pierce the tax cap.
