MA State Trooper Resigns After Being Arrested For Second Time

WRENTHAM, MA — After pleading not guilty to domestic assault charges less than a week ago, a Massachusetts State Trooper was taken into custody last Thursday by Walpole Police after violating a restraining order. Michael Atton, 34, was then handed over to Wrentham Police where he resigned from the police department Friday. Though Atton was free on a $5,000 bail, he was ordered to undergo mental health care and to stay away from his wife after being accused of assaulting her in front of their children. Police say Atton was arrested for a second time after a neighbor of his wife reported seeing Atton at her apartment complex twice since the first arrest. The trooper's attorney denied the new accusations, and police say Atton appeared, "confused" during the arrest, according to the Boston Herald. Atton was released Friday, ordered to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet and to have no contact with his wife. Due to being subject of an Internal Affairs investigation, Atton's resignation was received as a dishonorable discharge.
