BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man shot and killed by Birmingham police during a physical altercation at a restaurant Monday night has been identified as 43-year-old Armonda Contreras of Pinson.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said officers began pursuing a truck that was driving on the wrong side of the road in the 9100 block of Parkway East, and the pursuit led them to Tienda Y Taqueria Mexican Restaurant in the 8500 block of 1st Avenue North.
The driver of the truck, identified as Conreras, reportedly ran inside the restaurant, where police said Contreras began throwing glass bottles at the police officers.
After police used stun guns on Contreras, he reportedly tried to grab one of the officers' stun guns. Police then fired multiple shots at Contreras.
Contreras died at UAB Hospital Monday night from his injuries.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigations have taken over the investigation.
