NEW YORK CITY — A firework show 427 days in the making is coming to New York City. Pyrotechnics will blast off Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. from New York Harbor and simultaneously across the state as it marks the end of most coronavirus restrictions. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the celebration as a way to honor essential workers who toiled 427 long days since the COVID-19 crisis began. "It's our way of saying thank you all across the state, the essential workers to celebrate our reopening — our re-imagining," he said at One World Trade Center. "And to remind all New Yorkers: join the success, join the success. You want to honor essential workers? I'll tell you how. You want to honor essential workers, you get vaccinated so you don't need the essential workers again." The firework show is one of 10 across the state, from New York City to Niagara Falls, to honor workers and mark 70 percent of adult residents getting at least one dose of vaccine. The Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and Penn Station's East End Gateway, in addition to other landmarks, also will be lit in the state's colors of blue and gold Tuesday night, Cuomo said. To catch the firework show, a good rule of thumb will be go toward waterfront spots with a good view of the Statue of Liberty. That means Battery Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge Park or whatever secret spot you might have.
