A hike designed to provide a tour of Metropolitan Park and to understand the potential and possibilities that are before us.
This is an urban hiking experience for individuals who value urban parks, outdoor recreation, and the St. Johns River. The hike will showcase Metropolitan Park, a valuable natural area near the urban core. It will reveal the park is a well-maintained, highly functional natural area that provides a broad array of recreation and entertainment options. Hikers will be introduced to adjacent natural areas along the river that could be coupled with the park to create an expansive, interconnected riverfront park system. Efforts will be made to illustrate the critical role the park plays as a natural, resilient barrier to river flooding. The hike will use park walkways, sidewalks, and adjacent roadways to create a 1.5-mile route. The hike will include periodic stops and seek to maintain a comfortable pace. This will be a 30 to 45 minute, low intensity hike suitable to a broad array of interested individuals. We will be walking on paved and concrete surfaces, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The hike will also navigate through areas impacted by the Hart Bridge Ramp demolition, so be prepared to hike on some uneven surfaces.
DIRECTIONS: Whether using a navigation app or a map, proceed to TIAA Bank Field east of downtown Jacksonville. The WJCT Media headquarters parking area is at the South end of the field, on the South side of E Bay Street. The entrance to the parking lot has been diverted due to the Hart Bridge Ramp demolition and not clearly marked. So be watchful when looking for the entrance to the parking lot.
