Health care administrators and managers play a critical role on the business side of the health care industry, with responsibilities that include overseeing budgets, billing, scheduling appointments and seeking ways to improve patient care. State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota's (SCF) newest associate in science (A.S.) degree in health services management now affords individuals seeking non-clinical health care careers a local pathway to earning their degree to providing a meaningful impact. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the number of health services management jobs nationwide will increase 32% by 2029. With the A.S. in health services management program, students will be well-equipped with practical industry experience to enter the workforce and join a team serving patients and providing critical support to caregivers. "A patient's health care experience is impacted by several individuals including many who provide critical non-clinical services," said Matt Connell, dean of nursing and health professions at SCF. "In addition to our long history of training exceptional clinical professionals through our nursing and health professions programs, we will also bolster the healthcare workforce by preparing the teams that support the numerous non-clinical aspects required to run hospitals, doctor's offices and healthcare facilities." The 60-credit A.S. degree will include the standard general education courses and cover core specialization classes such as health care technology, medical law concepts, electronic health/medical systems and health care delivery systems. Classes are available online and in accelerated eight-week sessions to provide flexibility for students to earn the degree while balancing work and family commitments. Additionally, students completing classes in health services management are also earning credits that can be applied toward SCF's health services administration bachelor's degree should they wish to continue their education.
