Description

Join F&CS's Mike Ellis, LCSW for a practical workshop on developing de-escalation skills to help improve your communication with your teen. This fast-paced and experiential workshop will offer participants the opportunity to gain understanding and skills to successfully de-escalate conflicts with teens. We will look at the physiology of conflict, and understand how developmental norms, family relationships, mental and physical health, peer experiences, substance use, and cultural expectations can play a role in triggering teen escalation. Finally, we will learn and practice evidence-based success strategies for communicating in ways that reduce overall conflict and de-escalate explosive episodes. Please come prepared to ask questions, challenge the presenter with the tough situations you are facing, and practice communication skills you can use to reduce conflict with the teen(s) in your life. Family & Children's Service of Ithaca envisions a community where all families, children, seniors and, individuals have access to the social supports they need to lead full and meaningful lives.
