San Diego Reports Just 46 New COVID Cases As California Prepares To Reopen

By Chris Jennewein, Times of San Diego June 15, 2021 San Diego County public health officials reported 46 new COVID-19 cases Monday as California prepared to reopen from the pandemic on Tuesday. The daily case totals have remained under 100 for much of the past two weeks, and the 14-day rolling average of positive cases has stabilized at 0.8%. No new deaths were reported over the past two days. The county death toll remains at 3,770. First-dose vaccinations on Monday surpassed a county-set goal of 75% of the population aged 12 and older. A total of 2,207,447 people have received at least one does of vaccine, and 1,749,978 residents are fully vaccinated. The 75% goal is considered the level needed to achieve "herd immunity" against the virus while acknowledging that some people will choose not to be vaccinated and remain susceptible to the disease. A total of 4,217,565 doses have been received by medical authorities in the county and3,891,607 doses administered. Most COVID-19 restrictions throughout California will end Tuesday as the state retires its Blueprint for a Safer Economy tier system and lifts capacity and physical distancing restrictions for most businesses and activities. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that only unvaccinated people will be required to wear masks at work beginning June 17.
