CALIFORNIA — At least 111 assault rifles and various firearms disappeared from California military bases or were recovered in the state between 2010 and 2019, according to an Associated Press investigation. Guns were taken from Army and Marine bases, as well as Navy ships, and some were reportedly used in violent crimes including shootings and robbery. The 111 California weapons were among at least 1,900 U.S. military firearms that were unaccounted for, AP reported. Many of the weapons taken were meant for war, but military officials said the missing guns are just a fraction of their inventory. Some have also been recovered. A sailor admitted that he took a pistol from his ship's armory to protect himself against gangs he was formerly connected to, he told the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
