CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police charged a driver in a fatal crash that led to the death of a motorcycle driver Monday evening. The collision occurred in the 7700 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard shortly before 9 p.m., according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Officers responded to the scene located at East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Delta Crossing Lane, and found a 2016 Kia Forte that was damaged in the rear, and a 2004 Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Shaquon Thompson, 31. He was pronounced dead at the scene, CMPD said. The driver of the Kia Forte, who was identified as 19-year-old Moo Paw, along with his passengers were uninjured and remained on the scene. CMPD's major crash investigation unit, along with its DWI Task Force, the motor unit and crime scene search all responded to the scene. "Their preliminary investigation indicates the Suzuki was traveling at a high rate of speed, and as Mr. Thompson was approaching Delta Crossing Lane, the Kia Forte pulled out in front of him. The Suzuki and Mr. Thompson struck the Kia Forte and became separated," CMPD said. "Speed is a contributing factor for the motorcycle," CMPD said. Following a screening for impairment, Paw was "found to have consumed an impairing substance," the police report added. Paw was arrested and charged with DWI; window tint violation; no operator's license; possession of marijuana over a half ounce and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. CMPD said an investigation into the crash remains ongoing and that anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-344-1600.
