Description
Hey, Denver! I'm a sax player with good chops, a strong ear, and plenty of experience as a performer in a variety of groups and styles. I'm looking for steady, paid work as a sideman in a standards-based or original jazz combo, a big band, or a horn line with a soul or funk group—a professional musician looking to work with other pros I can learn from, get inspired by, and grow with.
• studied jazz at University of North Texas; played in the lab bands
• can read charts and improvise well
• can listen across the band and blend into the group sound
• have a hard-working, professional attitude about rehearsal and performances
• influences are John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Joshua Redman, Stanley Turrentine, Bob Mintzer, and others
• also a strong vocalist who doubles on guitar (mainly blues/pop/country guitar, but could fill in on simpler jazz tunes with some practice; influences include John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughn, B.B. King, Kenny Burrell, Jimi Hendrix)
• favorite records include Giant Steps, Kind of Blue, Blue Trane, Midnight Blue, 'Round Midnight, Lady Sings the Blues, GO (Dexter Gordon), Joshua Redman (self-titled album), The Shape of Jazz to Come (Ornette Coleman), Back at the Chicken Shack (Jimmy Smith)
I live in Boulder, but I'm open to commuting for rehearsal and road-tripping for good shows.
If you've got a jazz group and I've got the skills and taste you're looking for, don't hesitate to respond! Thanks for your interest!
