Aaron Space & His Terrestrial Underlings make a stop at The Back Room on their West Coast summer tour. Marking the release of their new EP Grid (via London’s Dig That Treasure Records), Aaron Space & His Terrestrial Underlings make a stop at The Back Room on their West Coast summer tour. Led by Berkeley native, singer, songwriter and keyboardist Elihu Knowles, the group’s powerful mixture of jazz, electronica, experimental soul and atmospheric influences is brought to life on stage via a seven piece band of up and coming West Coast jazz musicians. Leaning heavily on Knowles’s background as a jazz drummer and composer, Aaron Space & His Terrestrial Underlings’ recorded work has been described as “a kaleidoscopic and completely gonzo amalgam of big band jazz, experimental collage, bass-laced trip hop, vaudevillian excess, Hollywood golden age romance, psychedelic pop, and classical soul and R&B.” (The Sun Lounge) Evoking a wide range of musical influences from Sun Ra to D’Angelo, Aaron Space & His Terrestrial Underlings’ live show brings spontaneous improvisation and the group's jazz sensibility to the fore, featuring soulful vocals and electronic manipulations alongside a sextet featuring alto saxophone, drums, bass, guitar, and two keyboard players. A Note About Our Indoor Performances California guidance currently allows for limited capacity (35 people) indoors, and that assumes all are vaccinated. So, we are asking that everyone buying a ticket for this show affirms that they and their guest(s) are indeed vaccinated. It may be that the allowable numbers will go to 50% of capacity. If so, we will put more tickets on sale. Although future shows may be even higher than that (100% is, of course, the hoped-for goal) this particular show will go above 50% in any case. In all likelihood, masks will be required for all indoor shows. As you know, this is because putting a large number of people in an indoor space for two hours is not 100% safe, even for vaccinated people. Although there is almost surely nothing to worry about, the mask is your extra layer of protection, like the seatbelt in your car. SO: 1. Be aware that the smaller number of tickets may sell out sooner than expected 2. Please be vaccinated AND bring your mask 3. WELCOME BACK TO INDOOR MUSIC! Tickets are $15 advance/$20 at the door general admission, $10 for students/low-income individuals. Children under 12 are free. Advance tickets are available at the link below, or you may purchase your tickets at the door the night of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby). The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-654-3808. Thank you for your support! Local musician Sam Rudin recently opened a new music venue in downtown Berkeley called The Back Room, which honors his vision to recreate the cozy ambience of the original Freight & Salvage. Rudin describes his new venture as a small space (100 people max), with great acoustics and comfortable seating, that showcases the musicians with respect and appreciation.
