Description

Join us for a great opportunity to gather with fellow sewing enthusiasts, learn new techniques, and make fun projects. The Southern Utah Sewing and Textiles Conference offers two days of hands-on sewing geared toward Family and Consumer Science educators, 4-H leaders/volunteers, and sewing enthusiasts throughout the community. Participants will receive instruction while making fun projects such as a felted wool pin cushion, a Bitsy Box zippered bag, a decorative bowl made from clothesline, a fun "chubby banana bag", and other exciting creations including an activity to help incorporate computer science and STEM concepts in a sewing project. We will also be working on a service project for Enchanted Makeover's Capes for Kids program. We will make capes to donate but each participant will receive the pattern for future use as well. Teachers: The State Office of Education approved 16 re-licensure points for this conference. The conference features keynote speaker and project presenter Rene Hall from southern Utah. Rene will discuss the process of using wool from shearing the sheep to making beautiful projects. She will share some of her amazing work and guide participants through a felted wool project of their own. Join us for two fun-filled days of inspiration, motivation, education, personal satisfaction, and the opportunity to meet other sewing enthusiasts. You might even win an awesome door prize from one of our many sponsors! Fee includes materials for all seven projects, lunch each day, swag bag, and hours of fun and friendship! Dates and Times: Tuesday, August 31, 8:30am - 5:15pm with an optional "open sewing" time from 7:00pm-9:00pm to finish projects, share ideas, and/or make an additional upcycled project. (Lunch is included.) Wednesday, September 1, 8:00am - 5:15 pm (Lunch is included.) Each participant must bring a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. If you have questions, please reach out to Andrea Schmutz at 435-634-5706 or [email protected]. You will make seven projects with an opportunity for an additional upcycled project (see the tentative agenda below): felted wool pin cushion, Bitsy Box zippered bag, chubby banana bag, child sized cape (for Capes for Kids program), pieced hotpads, pieced pillow cover using STEM concepts to teach quilting techniques, and a decorative clothesline bowl. COVID accommodations: The conference will be in the Grafton Exhibit Hall where we will have ample space for proper social distancing. Masks will not be required but you are welcome to wear one if that is your preference.
