FALMOUTH, MA — The new Falmouth senior center will have its grand opening this month after more than a year of delays brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. The grand opening for the new center at 780 Main St. is scheduled for 10 a.m., June 30. The two-story building replaces Falmouth's senior center on Dillingham Avenue. With the support of the select board, finance committee and the council on aging, town meeting voters in 2018 approved $9.7 million in funding, and residents subsequently approved a ballot measure authorizing a debt exemption for construction of the 17,000-square-foot center. The center was originally supposed to open in March 2020, but it was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic. While closed, senior center staff made outreach calls to link seniors with resources and services. Services included helping seniors make vaccination appointments, delivering over 6,000 groceries, legal, insurance and tax advisement and more. There are several reopening phases taking place before the grand opening. Phase one started on June 7 and lasts until June 18. During that time, staff and volunteers will go through orientation. Phase two goes from June 21 to 29 and involves allowing Falmouth residents over 60 into the building for early activity sign-ups and group tours. The final phase is the grand opening on June 30.
