ARVADA, CO — The Arvada City Council is set to decide Monday night whether to rezone and annex land at Indiana Street and West 66th Place to allow a new Amazon distribution center. Many Arvadans and other Jeffco residents who oppose the location for the proposed 112,000-square-foot facility say the center will destroy hundreds of trees and animal habitats along the Ralston Creek Trail, increase traffic and light pollution and possibly worsen Ralston Creek flooding. The new center, which would include a 1,100-space parking lot, would bring more than 1,000 jobs to the area, with a starting wage of $15 an hour, Amazon representatives said. But the proposed facility would also bring more than 1,300 daily delivery trips to the area, the company said. The Protect Maple Valley Park group has gathered more than 8,700 signatures in a petition against the proposal. Many community members said they believe Amazon is under-projecting the facility's environmental and quality-of-life impact on the area. In several posts, Arvadan Renee Stark called the proposal "incompatible and irresponsible," and said the center would destroy the natural environment in the area.
