JERSEY CITY, NJ — New Jersey Blood Services is making an urgent call to blood donors — the coronavirus pandemic severely decreased the amount of donors and blood in hospital reserves and local blood drives are trying to build up that reserve. New Jersey Blood Services is hosting a blood drive in Jersey City on July 2 in the Newport Mall from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The intense and constant need for new blood is due to blood's short shelf life, from five to 42 days. "Each day there are patients who depend on the transfusion of red blood cells, platelets and plasma to stay alive. But blood and blood products can't be manufactured. They can only come from volunteer blood donors who take an hour to attend a blood drive or visit a donor center," the New Jersey Blood Services said.
