Darien Neighbor Dispute Results In Arrest: Cops

DARIEN, IL — A Darien man upset over his neighbor revving up his car engines got into an argument with the man late last month, then challenged him to a fight, police said. Michael V. Jummati III, 19, faces a charge of simple battery in connection with the incident. About 10 a.m. May 30, Jummati, who lives in the 8300 block of Cramer Lane, went to a 58-year-old neighbor's house to complain about how he revved up his engines going down the street, according to a police report obtained through a public records request. They got into an argument. At one point, the neighbor told Jummati that he was the "crazy guy" in the neighborhood and that he didn't want to "mess" with him, the report said. The men moved to the end of the driveway. There, Jummati placed a stick on the ground and told the neighbor that if he stepped over it, he would beat up the neighbor, police said. The neighbor stepped over the stick, prompting Jummati to head-butt the neighbor in the face and punch him a number of times, according to the report. In defense, the neighbor grabbed Jummati, took him to the ground and stuck Jummati once, police said. A neighbor arrived to restrain Jummati. Jummati laughed and told the neighbor later that if he had not been subdued, he would have kept hitting the neighbor, police said. The two calmed down and spoke after the incident, with Jummati apologizing for the fight, according to the report. Jummati was taken to the hospital for an injury to his head, while the neighbor suffered scratches and cuts on both arms, his face, chin and lip and a swollen bump on his forehead, police said. The neighbor let police look at his video surveillance, which captured the fight. Although the video lacked sound, it largely confirmed the neighbor's chain of events, according to the police report. Police issued an arrest warrant for Jummati. He was arrested a few days later.
