Join us for our 3rd show of 2021! Saturday June 26th, 6:30-10PM w/ Super 88, Terribly Happy, Steven, and Jared Grabb! Outdoor show! Punks in Peoria: Making a Scene in the American Heartland is a new book chronicling the underground Punk Rock scene in and around Peoria, IL, from its start in the 1980's up to the early 2000's. The book also comes w/ a limited compilation LP (on Alona's Dream Records) of Peoria-area acts, all mining in Punk Rock and its various offshoots. "Punk rock culture in a preeminently average town... Synonymous with American mediocrity, Peoria was fertile ground for the boredom- and anger-fueled fury of punk rock. Jonathan Wright and Dawson Barrett explore the do-it-yourself scene built by Peoria punks, performers, and scenesters in the 1980s and 1990s. From fanzines to indie record shops to renting the VFW hall for an all-ages show, Peoria's punk culture reflected the movement elsewhere, but the city's conservatism and industrial decline offered a richer-than-usual target environment for rebellion. Eyewitness accounts take readers into hangouts and long-lost venues, while interviews with the people who were there trace the ever-changing scene and varied fortunes of local legends like Caustic Defiance, Dollface, and Planes Mistaken for Stars. What emerges is a sympathetic portrait of a youth culture in search of entertainment but just as hungry for community—the shared sense of otherness that, even for one night only, could unite outsiders and discontents under the banner of music. A raucous look at a small-city underground, Punks in Peoria takes readers off the beaten track to reveal the punk rock life as lived in Anytown, U.S.A." This celebration will feature 4 acts, three from Peoria, and one who historically played many fertile shows in Peoria. The show will also be preceded by a book and record fair! Stay tuned for more info on this soon. Advance tickets* are $10.00 (+ fees), and if any remain, $13 at the door. There will be 4 tables set up in front of the stage w/ table service for $20 a seat (+ fees) in advance, or $23 at the door. If you can, we request that you wear a mask if you are not vaccinated against COVID-19 whenever you are moving about the venue or not sitting. We also ask that you not attend if you're sick or have been exposed to someone w/ COVID-19. SUPER 88 (Peoria) - Rock & Roll "Peoria Rock n Roll. Old Dogs No Tricks." These Rock & Roll lifers are favorites in the Central IL music scene, and have been for YEARS! We enjoy hosting them at nightshop, and we're glad to welcome them back! TERRIBLY HAPPY (Peoria) - Emo, Indie Rock, Pop Punk "Pretty Midwest pop punk, I think." Well-stated, original stater. This young act has proven to be one of the best Indie bands in the fertile Central IL music scene over the last few years. They're a perfect vessel for the future of Peoria-and-beyond Indie Rock & Roll! STEVEN (B-N) - Indie Rock, Folk, Emo Steven was several things in its past existence - an acoustic duo, a Folk & Indie trio, and eventually a Rocking combo. They played many shows throughout Illinois in the late 90's and early 2000's, opening for the likes of Planes Mistaken For Stars, Low, Pedro The Lion, Cursive, Discount, Ted Leo, The Alkaline Trio, etc. The last two years have led to the two primary writers behind Steven to be living in the same community for the first time since the early 2000's. What comes next remains to be seen! JARED GRABB (Peoria) - Americana, Indie Rock, Alt-Country, Punk "Low-key anthems for all working class dreamers." Jared, from his early days as a member of The Forecast and his bands, Cherry Lane and Girl Named Megan, to his time in Scout's Honor, his solo work, and his recent project, Jared Grabb Among Thieves, is the definition of a lifer in the Midwestern DIY Punk + more community. Jared has performed at nightshop 9 times prior, both with his band Among Thieves, and solo; you could say that Jared is a nightshop favorite, and you would be correct! *Advance Tickets will be on sale until Saturday, June 26th at 12:00PM, if they don't sell out first!
