Learn the art of binding a fine leather book sewn on tapes! In this class students will learn how to bind a fine leather book. They will learn how to make sewn on endsheets, use a sewing frame to sew a text block onto tapes, round a spine, pare genuine leather, tool decorative designs on genuine leather, and learn the importance of keeping signatures in order. Discussions surrounding decisions to construct books in this fashion will be discussed along with other topics. Previous knowledge of basic bookbinding is necessary for this class, such as sewing the link stitch, kettle stitch, and paper grain direction. This is a TWO PART class. The first session meets on Friday August 13 at 6pm-9pm, the second session on Saturday August 14 at 10am-2pm. Students must be available to attend both sessions. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ This class is taught by Mel Hewitt. Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. She is a board member of Spokane Print and Publishing Center where she also teaches classes on the book arts, and serves on the board for the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers.
