JERSEY SHORE, NJ — The official start of summer is still 10 days away, but the warm weather is drawing people to the Jersey Shore for the weekend. Traffic was picking up on the Garden State Parkway as of 4:30 p.m. Friday, with delays due to pockets of volume from the Raritan River bridge south to exit 63 for Long Beach Island. The trip south from the Raritan River bridge was taking nearly 2 hours to get to Long Beach Island, according to 511nj.org. Route 35 south through Monmouth County into and through Point Pleasant was heavy, and Route 37 east to Seaside Heights had heavy traffic as well, according to 511nj.org. Friday's rainy weather seemed to have lessened the traffic somewhat southbound. Saturday could see a lower volume as well, with highs of just 73 degrees expected in Toms River and cooler at the beach, according to the National Weather Service forecast for Toms River. Clouds are possible in the morning but there are no showers in the forecast for Saturday. Sunday's forecast calls for high temperatures in the upper 70s and just a 20 percent chance of showers, the weather service said. If you're headed down to the Shore to take in the sunshine, expect to see heavier traffic Saturday and Sunday morning on Route 195 for people coming east to Belmar and Asbury Park. Route 36 will be heavy very early in the morning with daytrippers headed to Sandy Hook both Saturday and Sunday for those trying to get their spots before the parking lots fill up. The Parkway will likely see heavy volume southbound from above the Raritan River to Long Beach Island and down to Atlantic City on Saturday morning as well. For those who come Saturday and stay for the weekend or those who come down Sunday only, the trip north on Sunday evening will likely be very heavy, since the better weather is predicted for Sunday.
