BROOKHAVEN, GA — More than 20 roads in the city of Brookhaven will have fresh pavement by the end of the year. City crews kicked off the 2021 paving season Thursday. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) proceeds are covering the cost of 4.96 miles of roadways outline in the city's five-year paving plan north of Interstate 85, as well as 5.04 miles of roads on an expedited schedule south of I-85 using LaVista Park Special Tax District funds. By the end of the year, 24 roads will be paved, according to a city news release. Brookhaven City Council members approved a $3.5 million contract with Atlanta Paving and Concrete for the project in April. "We are starting this year a full year ahead of schedule," Public Works Director Don Sherrill said. "We finished our list in 2020, now we can get a jump on the roads which were identified based upon the Pavement Condition Index, which helps us prioritize projects with available funding." Due to a shortage on Portland Cement, the contractor is starting with roads that only need to be milled and inlayed. Crews are kicking off the repaving season with Longwood Trace, Sheridan Court, East Osborne Road from Caldwell to Apple Valley roads, and Citadel Drive from Wild Creek Trail to Briarcliff Road. All other streets will begin upon availability of Portland Cement. "Since we are so far ahead of schedule, we brought in the laser trucks to scientifically evaluate the present condition of all our roads, to provide the basis for a new five-year plan. With this information, we can continue to prioritize the voter-approved SPLOST funds in the most efficient way to get the best roads at the best price."
