JERSEY CITY, NJ — A Jersey City family is looking for their newly adopted dog. The Honis family had been fostering dogs from Puerto Rico through the pandemic and recently decided they couldn't quite part ways with one of the fosters. On May 17, while the family was walking the pup, an accidental fall left the leash loose and the dog ran off — she's been missing ever since. Through the journey of trying to find their new pup, Andrea Honis told Patch she was exposed to a new world of dog tracking and has gathered tips and tricks to try to spot their pooch. Among the tips that dog trackers offer is to refrain from publicizing the dog's name in flyers. "Its best if she only hears us call her name, that way she's less likely to run or feel chased by strangers," Honis said. The family has been working with Buddha Dog Rescue and Recovery to try to find their pup. While flyers have been posted across Jersey City and Hoboken but Honis said both cities remove all flyers after 48 hours, so she turned to social media to spread the word. "We've had a few groups of people approach us to help — we're so grateful," Honis said. While the dog has a collar with tags and is microchipped, the chip only helps once the dog is found by someone and identified as lost. Because their dog was a rescue, she was severely traumatized and has a hard time trusting humans. "We really worry she'll just run further out," Honis said.
