JOLIET, IL — Joliet police recently arrested 20-year-old convicted felon Demetrius Coleman in connection with five new criminal charges, including ones involving the illegal possession of a gun. This week, the Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow charged Coleman with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, obstructing justice, possession of a gun without a Firearm Owner's Identification Card and defacing the identification marks on a gun. Coleman lives in the 400 block of Grant Avenue, jail records show. According to the criminal complaint, Coleman was convicted in 2020 of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Then, on June 5, Joliet police arrested him after he had a .40 caliber Ruger SR40 semi-automatic pistol while he was on parole or mandatory supervised release. The charge involving the defacing of the gun states that Coleman "knowingly possessed a firearm ... Ruger SR40 semi-automatic pistol, upon which the importer's or manufacturer's serial number had been removed or obliterated." The obstructing justice charge, according to the criminal complaint, states that Coleman intended to obstruct police by concealing physical evidence, being the Ruger semi-automatic pistol, which was hidden inside a bag. Coleman was arrested and booked into the Will County Jail during the early morning hours of June 6. He remained in the jail Thursday night unable to post 10 percent of his $75,000 bail.
