TEMPE, AZ — The ASU Sun Devils are turning to an alum to be the school's next baseball head coach.
Willie Bloomquist, who played in Tempe from 1997-99, replaces Tracy Smith, who was fired by the university Monday.
Bloomquist is a 14-year Major Leaguer who previously spent five years as a special assistant to Arizona Diamondbacks President & CEO Derrick Hall.
Prior to that, Bloomquist served on the board of directors for USA Baseball, after playing for the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, D-backs and Cincinnati Reds.
Bloomquist was the 1999 Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year, while also leading the Sun Devils to the 1998 College World Series.
Bloomquist's hire is contingent upon approval by the Arizona Board of Regents.
