Press release from the City of Iowa City: June 9, 2021 Community Connection: 2021 Juneteenth Celebration & Commemoration Community Connection is a video series that highlights the different people and organizations in our community. Each episode, Mayor Bruce Teague interviews guests about a variety of issues that are important to our residents. Juneteenth marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when some of the last enslaved people in America were freed from Confederate Texas. Hear from our special guests, Keshia Fields and LaNisha Cassell, about plans to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth in Johnson County and at the African American Museum of Iowa with a week's worth of virtual and in-person events.
