Description
PHOENIX, AZ — A crash on eastbound Loop 202 in south Phoenix killed four people and injured nine more Wednesday night, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The crash occurred just after 10 p.m. near the 52nd Street/Van Buren Street exit, when a tractor-trailer hauling a tanker full of milk failed to slow down for traffic, crashing into seven vehicles, according to the department.
A total of six people were taken to nearby hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries, while three others were transported in stable condition, according to the department.
The crash caused the tanker to separate from the cab, crossing the concrete median and coming to a rest on its side in the westbound HOV lane of Loop 202, with the tractor-trailer catching fire after the crash, the department said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not impaired at the time of the crash, according to the department.
Westbound lanes on Loop 202 reopened at 4:45 a.m., while eastbound traffic reopened at 9 a.m., the department said.
No arrests or charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
