From year after year I see my country adopt things from/or caused by "white" part of the world like in policies about consumption, import and export things like that. A lot of things happening in "white" country, will happen in my country years later. For instance rather than stunting for kids, we have child and teen obesity now due inactivity from gadgets/tech and processed food companies like nestle or danone, big companies drop their pollutant to our water source. This quality of sperm dropping is definitely will affect us too sooner or later combined with drop in birth as women and girls get more basic education and go to work force. While it's true this is white biased, I don't think it's good to discredit the pattern the researchers see. Truthfully as people from less well to do countries like mine has our lives massively affected by mega capitalist from "white" countries. Their expansion means changes in our lifestyle including women's. There are prices to pay here and once it happens, women and girls would be the first to get the burnt. For their paper, Swan and her colleagues looked at sperm counts recorded in other published studies between 1973 and 2011. They chose to group the relatively limited historical data on population sperm counts into two big categories: “Western” and “Other.” The researchers labeled the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand—majority-white areas—as “Western.” They lumped all other countries, with their majority brown, Black, and Asian populations, into the category “Other.” Without using the word white, researchers signaled—as anthropologists and psychologists have done when comparing populations around the world—that the men we should be concerned about are white men. Hmm. Edit: they did their best to take a hammer to the problem by suggesting fertility varies across time and space, environment, pollutants, hormonal and metabolic health based on the age of the human male animal. Duh. Yes, the screech of Western (meaning majority white, Internet dwellers) is loud, but the "human race" will not be compromised because some members of the species die off, don't reproduce, or aren't fit to survive. All over the world men and women still have babies and families. It's really just a western culture issue. Sure we can blame pollutants. But what can be done about this? Our current generations will have to survive this environment and if they have descendants, they'll have to learn to make healthier choices like humans from other parts of the planet who are not yet spoiled and myopic or massively obese. Of course fertility for men (and women) isn't great if both animals have a BMI of 70 and eat 6000 calories a day. It would be physically impossible for these two fat stupid apes to mate because they literally ate their ability to love, make love, connect, and be a normal healthy human animal out of their life. They ate their dreams and they'll die celebate as they clearly were not the fittest in their brief life. Our species is fine. But my home country (US) is suffering. Thanks for the article.
