Nursery Assistant Position at Whispering Winds Bamboo in Kipahulu, Maui. This is a full-time position with health care (after 3 weeks) and other benefits (immediately). There is a 90 day trial for this position, which could include a drug test. Full Time (40 hours/week) Daily schedule flexible, anywhere from 7 am to 6 pm. Monday through Friday, possibly a Saturday as well. EXPERIENCE AND BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS Requirements: -Prior employment working with plants and familiarity with how a plant nursery operates. -Must have a valid driver’s license and legally able to work in the State of Hawaii. -Able to operate power tools: chop saw, Sawzall, hedger. Responsibilities: -bamboo propagation: maintain inventory levels of all species -cuttings, air layering, and rhizome division. -proper labelling of all plants -maintain nursery inventories of: ---plants ---fertilizers, pots, labels, irrigation supplies ---potting mix ingredients -infrastructure maintenance -irrigation maintenance and repair: overhead sprayers and spray stakes -nursery housekeeping: seed room and potting shed organization. -nursery border and edge maintenance -weeding and feeding -daily recording of all nursery activity. -oversee and manage other workers approximately 1 day/week. -maintain health and inventory of “field” stock -hedging and topping field stock -out-planting in the “field” to maintain propagation stock inventory -Duties would include lifting and/or moving at least 50 pounds and other strenuous tasks, working on uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling, and working in the rain. -Pulling orders and prepping off island deliveries for agricultural inspection. OTHER: -Must be a team player and self-starter with a strong work ethic with a positive attitude. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Introductory pay rate starting at $18/hour. Live on a 180 acre farm in unique area of Maui. Plenty of room to grow food and live a “homesteader’s” life.
