NEW YORK CITY — A days-long search for the shooter who felled 10-year-old Justin Wallace ended Wednesday with the arrest of a Queens man.
"I want the Wallace family and all New Yorkers to know due to the extraordinary work of the NYPD the suspected killer has been found, has been arrested and will face justice," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
UPDATE: The individual wanted for the below crime has been arrested and charged by @NYPDDetectives https://t.co/MAl9p5AmjS— NYPD NEWS (@NYPDnews) June 9, 2021 NYPD identified the suspect as Jovan Young, 29, who lives about a mile from the Wallace household in the Rockaways.
Young faces a murder charge in Wallace's death, in addition to attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
All the counts stem from a violent incident Saturday night along Beach Street in Edgemere. Surveillance video showed a man fire multiple shots toward a home.
Shots struck young Wallace — who just spent the day at the beach and was planning his upcoming 11th birthday party — in the chest, as well as a 29-year-old man in the shoulder, authorities said. Wallace died in a local hospital.
Wallace's death put the city's recent wave of shooting into stark relief. De Blasio, who had a painful meeting with Wallace's family, promised to address the violence.
"The message is clear: if you use a gun in New York City, you will be arrested," he said. "If you harm someone, if you kill someone, you will be brought to justice. There will be consequences."
