ARLINGTON, MA — The heat advisory from the National Weather Service has been extended until 8 p.m. Tuesday, prompting the Arlington Public Schools to call an early dismissal. On Tuesday, June 8, schools will release at the following times: Preschool 11:30Elementary 11:30Gibbs/OMS 11:45The high school will continue with its current plan for the MCAS in the morning and remote classes in the afternoon.Superintendent Kathleen Bodie said temperatures reached the mid-80s on the upper floors around midday Monday, with some rooms on the third floor closing in on 90 degrees. "Given spacing guidelines for students during lunch, it will be a challenge to provide space inside or shaded space outside and be able to move classes in very hot classrooms to lower floor spaces," Bodie said. "Additionally, it is difficult for both students and staff to wear masks for several hours in very hot rooms. Mask wearing remains a requirement for safety."
