MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah Public Schools officials provided an update to mask guidance in all facets of the school day, but only in rare instances is it likely that students will be able to take their mask off in the classroom. Many districts across the state are updating their protocols following new guidance from Gov. Phil Murphy, who this week said that "school officials are empowered to make the best decision for their buildings and communities" when it comes to mask wearing during "extreme weather conditions." REMINDER: School officials are empowered to relax masking among students and staff in their buildings given extreme weather conditions. pic.twitter.com/oBIjUfBFgT— Governor Phil Murphy (@GovMurphy) June 7, 2021 In a letter to the school community, Mahwah school officials said "the districts' ability to provide most classrooms with cooler temperatures via air-conditioning" will mean that students will keep their masks on indoors in most situations. However, should classroom temperature rise above 76 degrees, "masking requirements shall be altered for comfort and safety in these circumstances." Students can also be fully unmasked while participating in outdoor activities and can "use their discretion" in regard to removing their mask while on buses.
