PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I The City of South Portland, is currently seeking an Equipment Operator I to join the Public Works Team. This position is a full time, year-round, benefits-eligible, Union position with a rich benefits package. This position is responsible for safely operating a variety of construction equipment requiring specialized skills, such as light-to-medium rollers, skid steers, curbing machine, sidewalk paver, sidewalk machines and all associated attachments, along with a variety of vehicles including pickup trucks, 3-axle dump trucks, and plow trucks. Work involves seasonal operations variations, year round. Must be able to work long hours in adverse weather conditions. This position also requires various manual labor tasks associated with Public Works operations. Equipment operators are responsible for safe, efficient operation of trucks including performing preventative maintenance tasks and making minor repairs and adjustments on the vehicles. Drivers must have skills in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing and judging overhead and side clearances, turning radius and braking distances. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations for moving vehicles are of utmost importance. Some knowledge of methods used in such laboring duties as repairing shoulders, hard-surfaced roads and sidewalks, constructing parking areas and walkways, cleaning, and roadside debris collection. Must be a team player willing to cooperate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and outside contacts. Must possess a Class B CDL, or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
