Description

Learn how to forage edible and medicinal herbs across Oakland's neighborhoods. *Please note that this is the first of three events. Each event will need to be booked separately and will involve walks in three different neighborhoods* Join Mycelium educator Phoenix Love Armenta on a foraging walk through East Oakland neighborhood. Along the way we will find and identify medicinal herbs and plants that are commonly found in the Bay Area and learn a little about the history of each community. We will learn about local foraging laws and how to respectfully forage locally. We will take what we gather back to our community garden and learn how to turn our foraged findings into delicious and nutritious products that you can use in your home. Each month, we will focus on a different product: June will focus on making marmalade; July we will make herbal vinegars; and August is focused on herbal salves. Space will be prioritized for neighborhood residents and BIPOC communities. Masks will be required. Limit 10 people per walk. Mycelium Youth Network prepares youth in the Bay Area -- who are most vulnerable to and already feeling the effects of environmental racism -- for climate change. We use a merger of indigenous environmental traditions that emphasize youth environmental stewardship and relationship building alongside a rigorous STEAM curriculum that focuses on practical hands-on skills for climate resilience and mitigation that youth create and implement in their homes and local communities.  MYN is already a pioneer in youth climate resilience work. We’re named one of a handful of organizations doing this work in California (International Transformational Resilience Coalition press release). We were also recently featured in Estuary Magazine and We Rise productions.
