Hate Crime Charges Filed In Asian Business Attacks In Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD — A man has been indicted on charges ranging from attempted murder to hate crimes in connection with attacks at three Asian-owned businesses in Baltimore. Darryl Doles is accused of throwing a piece of wood at a security guard who told him he needed to wear a face mask in a liquor store, yelling about the "Chinese" at another Asian-owned business and hitting two Asian employees in the head with a cinderblock at a third store. He affirmed to a bystander after the attacks that he was motivated by his dislike of Asian people, according to the indictment. "This crime shocked the conscience of everyone in Baltimore," State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby said in a statement. "Hate has no home in our city. We commend the victims for their courage and look forward to delivering justice." He went into Linden Discount Liquors in the 900 block of West North Avenue to use the lottery machine, where he was asked to leave for not wearing a face covering. Face coverings remain required in Baltimore businesses by order of the mayor. According to the indictment, Doles returned with a 2-by-4 and hit the security guard with it, and he tossed the lottery machine on the floor. Around 11:35 p.m., the indictment says Doles kicked a display window, knocking down wine bottles, at 40/40 Liquors in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. The Asian-American man who owned the store told him not to come back, and Doles said: "F--k Chinese!" in response. Around 11:45 p.m., the indictment says he walked into Wonder Land Liquors in the 2000 block of Pennsylvania Avenue and kicked a display window. The 67-year-old woman working there told him to leave the store, which was closed at the time, and called 911 to report the disturbance. He returned six or seven minutes later with a piece of concrete in one hand, wrestled the worker to the floor, grabbed her by the hair, pushed her face to the ground and hit her three times in the head with the cinderblock, the indictment says. When the victim's 66-year-old sister ran to help her, Doles hit her in the head with the concrete, according to the indictment, which says that despite bleeding from her head, the 67-year-old sibling got up and pulled the attacker's mask off. A Baltimore police officer responded after midnight and reviewed surveillance video, then put out a description of Doles. The 66-year-old victim's son reviewed security tape as well and found Doles near Pennsylvania Avenue six blocks from the business, called police and he was arrested, the indictment says. Officials announced the indictment by a grand jury Monday in Baltimore. The woman who was first attacked with the cinderblock was taken to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for her injuries and has not yet returned to work because she suffers from headaches and dizziness, according to the state's attorney, which reported she had stitches in three places on her head. Her sister has missed work because of the attacks as well, according to the state's attorney, who said she suffered from a possible concussion and a gash to her temple that was too near to veins to stitch safely. Authorities said she also suffers from dizziness and headaches.
