Description

Culver City Crossroads June 8, 2021 In the mid-1970s, art historian and curator Donna Stein was hired away from the Museum of Modern Art to help shape the collection of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in formation, a pet project of Farah Diba Pahlavi, the wife of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Donna, the Wende Museum's former deputy director, wrote a fascinating book about her experiences: The Empress and I: How an Ancient Empire Collected, Rejected, and Rediscovered Modern Art. Cold War Spaces host Joes Segal will speak with her about her role in collecting significant artwork for the museum, the relation between art and politics in Iran, and the fate of an art collection condemned to an underground existence after the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
