SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA — A 66-year-old motorist was killed Monday in a solo crash on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.
The Oceanside man lost control of his 1998 Dodge Caravan while headed north on the freeway shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The minivan swerved to the left and struck a center-divider barrier north of Las Pulgas Road, then veered off the eastern edge of the freeway, hit a second guardrail, overturned and tumbled down an embankment, coming to rest on its roof about 40 feet from the roadway, the CHP reported.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle. Paramedics airlifted him to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was pronounced dead.
The accident forced a closure of the far right-hand northbound lane of the freeway for about three hours.
