I have been raising Silkworms off and on for over 16 years. It is either feast or famine. This spring it is a feast. I have thousands that were just hatched. If you have access to a mulberry tree or bush, you are in luck! That is all they eat.
They are full grown in about a month.
They turn into real silk cocoons.
In about 3 weeks they emerge as a white moth.
The moths do not eat or drink. They just mate!
The female lays eggs and the cycle starts again!
These are fascinating creatures.
In the silk industry they kill the larva inside and start spinning the silk
from the outside in one continuous strand.
They join about 5 other cocoons and it makes a thread.
If you let these emerge, you can still make silk, it is
just not continuous but it still joins together.
Google Silkworms and contact me. We can talk about price and quanity.
Fun summer project for kids! Silkworms are soft caterpillars... not slimy worms!
First 3 pictures is what size they are now. About as long as the pencil lead on a sharpened pencil.
Next 3 pictures show how big they get and their cocoons.
Next 2 pictures gives ideas of what can be made with cocoons.
