Description

Celebrating Independence Through Community! This holiday is normally celebrated on the 19th of June to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas in 1865 where federal troops arrived in Galveston. It was in the aftermath of the Civil War; slaves were declared free under the terms of the January 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. However, it wasn't until '65 that the slaves in Texas were even notified they were free. As a culture, we believe no one is free, until we ALL are free. This event will be a celebration for the final freeing of those slaves through free food, fun games, and community.
