Description
SOMERVILLE, MA — The Somerville Veterans' Commission on Monuments, Memorials and Dedications will begin accepting applications this summer to honor living veterans by dedicating a street corner in their name.
Somerville will be the first community in Massachusetts to extend this honor, which is typically reserved for late veterans. The announcement was made during the Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans' Cemetery.
"While this has been a notable tradition for many years, I've consistently heard from those in the veterans community how meaningful it would be to recognize and celebrate the military heroes in our community while they are alive," said Somerville Director of Veterans' Services Ted D. Louis-Jacques. "It is my deepest honor to take this long-standing tradition to the next level."
Families and friends of Veterans are encouraged to submit applications for street corner dedications. Applications will be available starting July 1 at www.somervillema.gov/veterans. The Commission will review all documents submitted in order to determine eligibility.
