AUSTIN, TX — The YMCA of Austin will offer free, drop-in child care for parents who are planning to get a COVID-19 vaccine in June. Parents can place their children ages 2 months to 12 years old in YMCA of Austin's Y Child Watch at any of is seven locations during operating hours, the nonprofit organization announced June 2. While they wait, children can participate in Y Child Watch activities for up to two hours as parents are being vaccinated at other community locations. In Y Child Watch, kids engage in arts and crafts, story time, outdoor play and games, officials said. "We undertand how important vaccinations are in helping our community stay healthy and recover from the pandemic," said Kathy Kuras, YMCA of Austin President & CEO. "By opening Y Child Watch to the community, we want to make it easier for parents to be able to access the many available vaccination opportunities in our area." Following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), masks are no longer required in YMCA of Austin branches for those who are vaccinated and or for those with medical conditions or disabilities preventing them from wearing a mask. Masks are highly encouraged for those who are not fully vaccinated, including children. If parents or children are not vaccinated, the Y encourages visitors to wear a mask and practice social distancing, officials said.
