Lane Closures Expected on I-55 In Will County June 7

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Parts of Interstate 55 that run through Will County will undergo construction beginning in the evening June 7 if weather permits, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced. The project includes repairs to bridges on the highway over U.S. 30, Canadian National Railroad, Mink Creek and an abandoned railroad in Will County. The first stage, beginning June 7, includes installing a temporary concrete barrier that will require overnight lane and shoulder closures in both directions on I-55 between Weber Road and Interstate 80. At least two lanes in both directions will be open at all times. Daytime traffic won't be impacted, and access to entrance and exit ramps will remain, according to the release. This construction, part of the Rebuild Illinois Plan signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker in 2019, is part of IDOT's plan to repair and improve almost 3,000 miles of highway over the next six years, according to a news release. About $2.7 billion is allotted for spending in the first year of the plan. During this time, 1,706 miles of highway and 128 bridges are expected to see improvements, according to a news release.
