TUCSON, AZ — Two Tucson police officers shot and killed a man suspected in a domestic assault at Jesse Owens Park Friday night, according to a narrative from the Tucson Police Department. Raymond Edwards, 45, was shot by police around 8 p.m. when he came toward them with a weapon, police said. Tucson police said a woman flagged down an officer who was in the park at 400 S. Sarnoff Road. She told the officer she was the victim of a domestic assault, but not injured. The suspect, later identified as Edwards, was found near the far west end of the park with "a sharp-edged weapon," according to police. Police said they told him to drop the weapon multiple times, be he did not. Police said Edwards came toward them with the weapon in his hand when both officers — Sgt. Richard Legarra and Officer Chad Barker — shot him. Legarra and Barker then used their first aid kits in attempting to save Edwards until paramedics arrived. The Tucson Police Department's office of professional standards will investigate the actions of the police officers, which police said is standard in all officer-involved shooting cases.
